At its worst — missed connections, overtired children, luggage crises, a destination that doesn't work for the age range — it's exhausting for everyone. The difference between these two outcomes is almost always planning. Here are the seven lessons our advisors apply to every family trip we book.
1. Direct Flights When Possible
Every connection multiplies the opportunities for something to go wrong, and in airports with young children, 'something going wrong' has a very different weight than it does for two adults with carry-ons. A direct flight arrives with a family that still has energy and enthusiasm for vacation mode. The premium for direct routing is almost always worth it for families.
2. Bring Snacks and Treats
Pack familiar snacks, refillable water bottles (empty through security, filled at the gate — most airports now have bottle filling stations alongside the water fountains), and a few special treats reserved specifically for the journey. The anticipation of a special airport snack can change the entire emotional tenor of the pre-flight experience.
3. Plan Entertainment Thoughtfully
Tablets loaded with downloaded content are essential for longer flights with children. But non-electronic options matter too — a travel journal each child documents their trip in words and drawings serves as entertainment, a souvenir, and a remarkable artifact years later. New books and a few small new toys — reserved for reveal on the plane — extend the window before screens are needed.
4. Get the Insurance
Children are more susceptible to illness in foreign environments than adults. Travel insurance that covers medical treatment abroad, trip interruption, and the pre-existing condition waiver (if applicable) is especially important for family trips. 5. Choose Your Destination Wisely
Not every extraordinary destination is age-appropriate for every child. A pristine overwater villa in Bora Bora is spectacular for adults and genuinely difficult for young children who need programming, other children to interact with, and activities beyond snorkeling. All-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean typically offer Kids Clubs and age-appropriate activities well-suited to families with young children. Cruises — particularly Disney and select family-friendly ocean lines — are our most frequent recommendation for first-time family travel abroad.
6. Cut Down on Luggage by Renting Equipment
Traveling with young children often means traveling with significant equipment — strollers, pack-and-plays, car seats, beach gear. Most resort destinations offer rental programs for these items, and the cost of renting is almost always less than the checked bag fees and logistical friction of bringing your own. When we book family trips, we include a note on what's available for rental at the destination so families can pack lighter.
7. Don't Over-Plan
The itinerary that tries to see everything leaves everyone exhausted and no one happy. Family travel benefits from a daily rhythm with one or two anchored experiences and substantial unstructured time — for the pool, for the beach, for whatever emerges. The families who come back saying they had the perfect vacation are almost always the ones who resisted the temptation to fill every hour.
