It was my junior year in high school. I came home from England with “Eleanor Rigby”, “Strawberry Fields”, and “Penny Lane” silently humming in my ears and “Carnaby Street” in my mind’s eye. My experience as an exchange student whet a lifelong appetite for travel, not just for the journey, but for how people and places have found themselves in this moment of history. The tastes, sounds, and sights of diverse lands produce people who are both different, and yet the same as us. Travel is indeed the education and exploration amongst the lands and people that help us all learn more about ourselves, and our place in the world. My Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences has served me well, with concentrations in government, history. and psychology.

I have planned trips and tours for almost 30 years. I’ve been to China and Europe numerous times. I especially like small groups that might include unique or special experiences with local people and places. I’ve visited a Tibetan family in Shangri-la, China, while waiting for a herd of yak to cross the road; slept in a Swiss Alps pension in Grindelwald, hearing only the sound of cowbells tinkling in the deep dark of night; and sailed in a long-tail canoe up the Mekong River to the Golden Triangle, where the boat owner pointed to the riverside village surrounded by crisscrossed bamboo fencing, saying that they shoot strangers there. Then there was the Truffle Festival in Alba, Italy, where the residents parade through the city streets in medieval costumes before the celebratory pageant. We had to make sure to include a visit to a Barolo wine tasting as well.

Cruises are great too, and the river cruises are special, since they offer intimate experiences with shore excursions included. These are small group venues with the opportunity to get into more interior sites and points of interest, while having the advantage of unpacking only once. Anyone for the Yangtze, Rhine, or Danube rivers?
